Sammy’s Story: A Skinny Stray That Changed Dog Food in Singapore

March 31, 2025

Early Life and Accident

Sammy, affectionately known as “Skinny” in his early days, spent years navigating life as a stray on the streets of Tuas. Like many street dogs, he lived among heavy machinery, harsh conditions, and constant uncertainty. One day, tragedy struck - he was hit by a lorry, leaving him critically injured and fighting for his life by the roadside.

A kind construction worker rushed to his side, and soon after, a familiar face appeared - his regular volunteer feeder, Rena. With help from a network of volunteers and the rescue organisation Action for Singapore Dogs (ASD), Sammy was rushed to receive urgent medical care. They knew they had to act fast, and they rallied together, determined to give him a second chance.

Emergency Treatment and Recuperation

The diagnosis was grim: multiple fractures, a shattered pelvis, and possible spinal damage. Sammy couldn’t stand, couldn’t control his bladder, and his right hind leg was cold and motionless. The odds were against him - but the incredible team of surgeons, nurses, and volunteers believed in his will to survive.

Surgery was a gamble, and one that required significant resources and support. With the help of generous donors and tireless caregivers, Sammy underwent a long and complex operation. He needed blood transfusions and round-the-clock care. After two challenging weeks in hospital, he was finally stable enough to be discharged into foster care.

Journey to Recovery

Sammy’s first foster home played a vital role in helping him recuperate. He came to us next as a foster dog, and it didn’t take long for us to fall in love.

At the time, he was still healing. He had a severe wound on his toe, made worse by dragging his weak hind leg, and suffered from frequent vomiting and diarrhoea. I tried all kinds of commercial dog food I could find, but nothing seemed to help. Determined to do everything I could for this dog who had been through so much, I began cooking for him - using fresh, whole ingredients.

That’s when everything changed.

His digestion stabilised. He could finally keep food down. He started gaining weight - and with it, more energy. His coat grew thicker, and his personality began to shine - playful, sweet, and full of joy. The leg everyone thought he might lose grew stronger over time, and soon he was walking, swimming, and running.

His transformation was nothing short of remarkable. And with it came a new chapter and a new name. Sammy.

Sammy blossomed into the loving family dog he was always meant to be (yes, we’re proud “foster fails”!). Affectionate, fun, silly, and always optimistic, he brings so much happiness to our lives. Now at 15 years old, he looks in the peak of health. He’s still running, playing, and living life to the fullest - proof that second chances are worth fighting for.

Sammy is our daily reminder of what love, care, and good nutrition can do. Through our Feed It Forward campaign, we’re proud to support ASD in giving more dogs like Sammy the same second chance.
